Hotel Review: Carlton Hotel, King’s Cross, London, England – July 2018

Hotel Review: Carlton Hotel, King’s Cross, London, England – July 2018.

I stayed at the Carlton Hotel in London’s King’s Cross area in July, 2018. I stayed there for one night as I was in London overnight for a concert, and needed accommodation that was close to London King’s Cross railway station, where I was due to take a train at 05:55 the next morning.

The hotel is a one minute walk from the railway station, straight across a busy A501 road. The street that the hotel is located on (Birkenhead Street), is frequented by a variety of characters including rough sleepers, street drinkers and people smoking ‘substances’. This wasn’t the most comfortable welcome, although I must stress, that other getting asked for change a few times, I didn’t have any problems. I can imagine for some people that this might be quite intimidating.

Check-in was quick and easy, taking around 2 minutes, I was then sent out of the hotel reception, back onto the street, where I was staying in building number 6, in room 6. The hotel is spread down the street in different properties.

I eventually found my room, which was on the ground floor at the back of the building (an internal room). The room was very hot and did not have air-conditioning, but did have a ceiling fan, which was very welcome. I want to point out before I go any further that this hotel was a BUDGET hotel for London, which is an incredibly expensive city. I paid £74 for bed and breakfast (although I left before breakfast was served), for a double room. I knew this was going to be a small room, so I wasn’t disappointed. In terms of facilities, I had a small double bed, desk, chair, wardrobe and en-suite bathroom with shower, toilet and sink.

If you book this hotel, do not come with high expectations, you are not going to get Hilton standard for £74 bed and breakfast in central London, it’s as simple as that. If you want a basic but clean place to put your head for the night, and close proximity to Kings Cross Station, then this place achieves that.
